Reading Under the Lights - Wednesday, October 14th @ 7:00 PM Free Family Engagement Activity
DHS Front Gym. A guest speaker will read a book, families will receive free books, and cookies. Due to the weather, this activity has been moved from the football field to the DHS front gym.
On Friday, each grade held a kickball tournament to celebrate homecoming and to mark their achievement of the reading goal.

Fifth graders in Ms. Harrington's class are authoring books and then sharing their work with their classmates. Great job to these young authors!
Check out the 3rd graders learning all about maps during social studies. Mrs. Hodgs is teaching social studies standards during library time. This way, students learn about non-fiction by reading about it in the library.
These students are using Reader's Theater to accelerate their reading during the Tier 2 Reading block at DIS. They get to read lines, practice adding voice, and have fun reading short plays and stories.
Going Gold! DIS/DUES staff and students have been Going Gold all throughout the month of September, and especially stepping it up last week. From collecting coins to wearing as much yellow and gold as possible, our students and staff have shown their support. All money raised throughout the week will be donated to Douglas Strong to support families within our community. Thanks for supporting this great cause.
September was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. We must continue to come together and support the brave kids fighting cancer every day. Their strength and courage remind us how important it is to stand together as a community.

October 2026 DIS/DUES Campus Newsletter
The DIS/DUES campus had their first lockdown drill of the year. Our staff and students practiced how to be safe in our building in the event of a safety incident. The students were amazing! A special thanks to our local police department and SROs for being part of the drill.

Fourth-grade students learned all about the lab equipment they will use during science class. Student groups researched a piece of equipment and presented the structure and function to their class. Science is a new Essentials class this year for 2nd-5th grades. We love having SCIENCE at DIS and DUES - great job, Mrs. Ewing
